The technologies that led to the fourth industrial revolution

Inventions throughout history have changed our way of living and relating to people. The way the world around us has changed. This change was determined by the industrial revolution.

At the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries, the steam engine and coal marked the beginning of the first industrial revolution.

The second one started towards the end of the 1800s and developed with the internal combustion engine, electricity and oil.

Atomic energy, astronautics and computer science introduced the third industrial revolution at the end of the Second World War.

What we are experiencing now is the fourth, and to give it origin is digital technology, Artificial Intelligence, Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR) and Mixed Reality.

Industry 4.0 and the opportunity to create new business models

The Impresa 4.0 National Plan (formerly  Industry 4.0 ) was an opportunity for all the companies that wanted and wanted to seize the opportunities related to the introduction of innovative technologies to increase the productivity and quality of the plants.

Such as? Let’s consider Ar: the use of this technology exploits the displays of  mobile devices  and  wearable devices  to enjoy additional information superimposed on the reality we see.

The advantages that can be drawn from this technology are endless. For example, when framing a photocopier it is possible to explain how to use the scan function or, again, it is possible to present an industrial machine detailing the explanations and instruction manuals thanks to the support of contents that in real time appear on the screen showing both the outside and the inside each component, videos explaining the functioning of gears and systems, the dynamics of processes and specificities.

In other words, these technologies improve the identification of efficiency and effectiveness solutions in order to enhance corporate knowledge and digital data.

All this leads to better performance, reduced costs, reduced times and therefore greater productivity and therefore profits.

Areas of application of AR and VR

The advantages to be enjoyed by investing in Ar and Vr concern various fields, not only in the assistance field.

The sectors that use these technologies are expanding, and the promoters are health care , tourism , retail , gaming and education.

Health

The AR is introduced in healthcare in the field of technical assistance from GE Healtcare , and has since expanded to the diagnostic and therapeutic sector.

WitHECA, section of Witapp that deals with products for healtcare, for example, has created a software that applied on a viewer is able to transform the results of a hologram CT that can be enlarged, turned and approached by the examiner. There are several products of this nature, which are transforming (for the better) the way to diagnose the pathologies and methods of intervention to treat them (also read the previous article to learn more).

Tourism

There are many tour operators who let their customers choose the holiday through a “virtual journey” of the chosen location using VR. So to foretaste what they will encounter. The companies in the sector have provided new opportunities to enhance their offer. From hotels to transport, passing through restaurants to museums, this technology can benefit many different subjects.

Gaming

What about gaming? What could be more revolutionary than fighting side by side with our superheroes thanks to an armor (visors and gloves) that allows it?

The most downloaded augmented reality apps on iOS in 2018 were: Night Sky, Home Design 3D and Dead Island: Survivors. On Google Play, instead, Guns of Boom are very popular: Online PvP Action, ARCore by Google and Sky Whale. In both platforms, the game category prevails: on iOS, games represent 25% of the downloaded AR content, while on Google Play they are even 74%.

Retail

In the retail sector, it is possible for example to buy a sofa and see how it is in our living room, if combined with our curtains rather than the rug ..

With AR, brands can offer customers  simulations associated with the testing of products and items , which can be configured as desired, but also ideas for cross selling or upselling, advice on use or useful indications for geolocation. This information can be viewed through  different devices: from a  smartphone  to a digital signage solution   embedded in an  interactive totem or a  magic mirror.

Instruction

In the school, teachers and educators more accustomed to technology introduce AR to familiarize students with subjects ranging from astrophysics to music, taking advantage of the strengths of this method: fun and involvement.

Winning cards of the AR eVR

It is not just a matter of involving customers in immersive experiences with the brand, but of performing complex operations with ease of use, and of having a direct perception of the advantages that derive from it.

In the industrial sector, for example introducing this technology in production, it brings an improvement in communication and therefore in the sharing of information within the team.

In logistics there is a noticeable reduction in the number of errors, in Maintenance and Support there is an easy communication of technicians with remote experts able to support them.

The application frontiers of AR and VR extending provide business opportunities.
